ISLS Summer 2010 Day 2

We wrapped so quickly today that we never had a chance to discuss journals. Please take a minute to respond to the prompts below with specific examples.
Thanks
Tim, Denny & Mary Lou

1. Highlights from the day including when you were most engaged? Why?
2. What implications will today's experiences have on your teaching and students' learning?

PS: Have you taken a moment to view the videos at the bottom of this blog?

  1. Primary headwaters and pebble count had me the most engaged. I think my students would benefit from this activity in many ways. I would find several different jobs for pairs of students and have them make predictions before we went into the field. They would then verify predictions with empirical data. It would help refine their estimation and research skills.

  2. What was engaging to me was being in the field, collecting data, and learning the terminology of what we were doing. Being a physical science teacher does not allow me to be outside much at all since most data collection does not require outside experimentation.

I can feel the excitement that most students will feel if they are not a "captive audience." They get to be more involved in their learning. The outdoors refreshes them, and me! And as a teacher, I believe there will be more measureable learning and less disciplinary problems.
